Here you will find the Howick Falls Hotel, one of the oldest Hotels in South Africa. Built in 1872. the Howick Falls Hotel has a proud history spanning 134 years. Visitors to the Hotel have included the likes of Mark Twaine, Cecil Rhodes and Paul Kruger. The Hotel is centrally situated and remarkably close to the Laager Wall, which was built after the 1879 defeat at Isandlwana.In days gone by, the hotel was considered to be a major stop off point for Pioneers, Explorers and weary travelers. Today the hotel offers affordable accommodation to a variety of travelers such as tour groups, holidaying families, traveling salesmen, and sportsmen and women participating in events such as the Comrades Marathon and Midmar Mile swim. There are many things to do in the area, a visit to the Howick Museum offers a glimpse into the old Howick and Lions River Areas. The displays include an informal settlement dwelling, and settler's early history, military badges and medical display. For the more energetic, and within the town boundaries, there are several walks on which one can embark. These include the Umgeni River Trail, The Howick Falls/Gorge Trail to the base of the falls, the Stables Trail and the Howick Town Trail. A hundred meters or so from the Hotel is the Howick Falls where the Umgeni River plunges 300ft over a waterfall. Below the Howick Falls is the Umgeni Valley Project, a 650ha reserve owned and managed by the Wildlife Society of Southern Africa. It contains giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, nana, impala, eland and other mammals. Accommodation The Howick Falls Hotel has three different accommodation options aimed at meeting your individual needs. Standard rooms, available as a double or twin, can accommodate two people and offer en-suite facilities with a shower, DSTV, Wireless Internet (coming soon), air-conditioning and high-security keyless card access. Suites or family rooms consist of two rooms sharing a large bathroom complete with bath and separate shower facilities. These rooms are ideal for the travelling family.
