Waterfall cottage is one of the earliest settler houses in the Dargle Valley. It was built in the mid-nineteenth century by a mad and reclusive Englishman using fieldstone from the surrounding hills and is a charming relic of vernacular settler architecture that has been sensitively restored. Although life in the Dargle was tough and terrifying when Waterfall Cottage was built (the mad recluse is supposed to have buried his small fortune somewhere nearby to safeguard it from brigands) it now finds itself at the heart of a serene working-farm and park-like garden. There are horses, Nguni cattle (the breed is traditionally used by the Zulus as a bride-price) and every kind of chicken, goose and parrot. The surrounding indigenous forest and redgrass plains - where you are welcome to go for walks - are home to abundant wildlife including blesbok, various duiker species, birds, endangered wattled cranes, owls and monkeys. The veranda of the cottage overlooks a delightful rose-garden (roses being a passion of the present owner) and a hanging wood of bird-filled indigenous treesoda & MTN signals Sitting-room: A stone fireplace heats the cottage.
