The Anglo-Boer WarThe Anglo-Boer War : British vs VoortrekkerThe Anglo-Boer War was the British versus Voortrekker was that was brought about by the discovery of gold in the Transvaal (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek : ZAR). In 1886 the Boers made an amendment to the voting act because they were concerned about a massive influx of foreigners (uitlanders). The foreigners on the goldfields protested and war between Britain and the ZAR began on 11 October 1899. The three year conflict (1899-1902) proved to be the longest, costliest, bloodiest and most humiliating war Britain had fought since 1815. Winston Churchill, General Sir Redvers Buller, Mohands Ghandi, General Penn Symons, President Paul Kruger and General Louis Botha are part of the rich tapestry of war which reflected triumph and tragedy at engagements such as Tala, Spioenkop, the Armoured Train Incident, Colenso, Elandslaagte, Tugela Heights, Vaalkrans and the Seige of Ladysmith. |
