Brackenburn offers selfcatering accommodation in a private cottage in the beautiful Kamberg Valley at the foot of Mount Lebanon. It is relatively unknown and therefore unspoilt, making it the ideal environment for nature lovers.

It is approximately 90km from Pietermaritzburg, a pleasant 75 minute drive taking you through sections of the Midlands Meander, Nottingham Road and RosettaKamberg is known to be one of the premier trout fishing areas in South Africa and besides the three dams and Little Mooi River fishing at Brackenburn, there are other venues in the vicinity for the flyfisherman.

Brackenburn is a 25 hectare property off the beaten track and is most suitable for a really relaxing get-away. For the energetic various activities are on offer, from leisurely strolls to stiff mountain walks. Nearby,facilities exist for Golf, Mountain Biking and Horseriding.

Accommodation:

The accommodation at Brackenburn is as impressive as it's surroundings. A very well appointed three bedroom Cottage is situated on the bank of the main dam. Literally a cast away.

The cottage consists of three bedrooms each with two single beds. The rooms are carpeted, spacious and comfortable. Rooms have superb views of the mountains, dams and hills of Kamberg. There are two bathrooms, one has a shower and one a bath. They are not en suite. The kitchen is especially well equipped to make your catering as easy and convenient as possible.

The lounge, dining area and kitchen are open plan.This really facilitates maximum social interaction. The lounge has a cosy atmosphere especially in the winter when the fire is lit and the flickering flames cast dancing shadows across the room. This is really what it's all about.

Wildlife

From the covered verandah one can observe the many varieties of bird life, high in the sky, perched in the trees or floating on the water. Although not that plentiful, small game such as duiker, rabbits and reedbuck are also regularly spotted. Baboons and Eland are to be seen higher in the hills.

Road conditions

The road to Brackenburn is generally good although the last 1.6 km of farm road can be very bumpy. In wet whether the road can be slippery. Most vehicles with reasonable clearance don't have problems. Should there be a problem help is not far off.

Provisions and shopping

Brackenburn is off the beaten track, so you should come prepared with most of your provisions. There is a small general dealer about 10 km away where basics such as bread, milk, some vegetables, petrol and diesel can be obtained. The store is open from about 8 am till 4.30pm during the week and mornings only on Saturday and Sunday. The next nearest shopping is in Nottingham Road.

There is only 1,2,3 and e TV, you may bring your own smart card for DSTV. There are no telephones or radios at the cottage. Newspapers are sometimes available at the store. Firewood, cleaning fluids and materials and toilet tissue are all provided. You need only bring your food, clothes, swimming towels and recreational equipment

A small rowing boat, jungle-gym and mounatin bikes are available to guests.

It is advisable to book for other activities ahead of time where this is possible. Information is generally available in the well-known Midlands Meander Directory available at most outlets in the area.

Arrival and departure times

Arrival times are normally after 13:00 and departures before 11:00. In some instances it may be possible to change these by prior arrangement to get the most out of the day.
