The town of Estcourt is located between the Midlands and the Central - Northern Drakensberg. Although you may think Estcourt would be a good place to stay en route to the Coast, there are better options where you are still close to the N3 but will experience the beauty of the countryside.

Giants Castle can be accessed from Estcourt, around Wagon Drift Dam, along the Wembezi road that leads to Moor Park and eventually joins up with the Giants Castle Road from Mooi River. You will find the unique Antbear Guest House along this route.

Originally known as Bushman's River on account of its waterside location, this picturesque town was renamed after the MP for North Wiltshire, Thomas Estcourt, who sponsored British settlers under the Byrne immigration scheme.

Ikukhanya Kwelanga Cultural Village is run by a traditional healer, who is also head of an organization of traditional healers. The "village" is a homestead in one of the townships around Estcourt and also includes a nursery specialising in plants with medicinal qualities, used by traditional healers for many years. Tours are conducted to a local township tavern and offer opportunities of meeting some of the local Zulu people and of seeing the dance troupe perform.

Visitors may witness the interesting process of glass making at Glamosa Glass. There is a large factory shop sector in town where people may buy a wide variety of products.

Fort Durnford offers one of the most complete bird egg collections in South Africa. In the 1840s Clem Heeley built an inn and trading store at a ford on the Bushman's River. In 1847 Fort Durnford was erected on a hill dominating the ford after a San tribe raided the place.

Estcourt Anglo-Boer War battle sites include the Brynbella-Willow Grange. Veglaager ("Battle Laager") is the site of a battle between the Boers and Zulus in 1838. Bloukrans Memorial marks the site where Voortrekker families were killed after the murder of their leader, Piet Retief. Winston Churchill was captured by the Boers at Chievely in 1899. A memorial marks the site of the engagement during which he was captured.
