Giants
Castle
is thought to be a mountain game reserve in the central region of the uKhahlamba
Drakensberg Park. It
takes its name from the silhouette of the peaks and escarpment that resemble
the profile of a sleeping giant. Giant's
Castle camp has been refurbished
with an additional 28 new self-catering chalets, curio shop, Izimbali
Restaurant and a fully licensed bar. Attractions to this famous
reserve are endless: spectacular hikes, fascinating rock art presentation
in the Main Caves, the famous Lammergeyer Hide, guided walks, mountain track
drives, birding, trout fishing... the list goes on.
Izimbali restaurant and bar provides guests with the
option of fully catered meals in its warm and relaxed atmosphere.
Giants Castle Game Reserve lies against the impressive
drakensberg Massif and stretches from the foothills to the very top of the
'Berg. It has a most attractive rest camp from which walks and trails
radiate in all directions. Two or three days in the reserve will net the
visitor most of the available birds species - probably 100 or more - but
some will take more effort to see than the casual visitor may be prepared to
make. The scenery is breathtaking and worth the visit for its own sake. The
birding is tremendously rewarding, even on the most casual morning or
afternoon stroll. A vulture hide allows unique birding in winter and the
Main Caves Museum gives an insight into the past life of the San People.
The weather is treacherous, especially in summer, so
take rainwear and warm clothing at all times.
