It is a very popular race that attracts over 17000 swimmers and is open to South African's and foreigners, men, woman, boys and girls! This annual event takes place in February on a Saturday and Sunday. Accommodation is at a premium during this event so we advise swimmers to book well in advance to avoid driving great distances to compete. The Midmar Mile known as one of the world's largest open water swims - was swum for the first time in 1973 when three friends, Mike Arbuthnot, Dick Park and Brian Glover, unable to compete in the Buffalo Mile in East London because of petrol restrictions, decided to stage a race in KwaZulu-Natal.
