You enter the Ezemvelo Nature Conservancy at the end of the cathedral peak Valley. Only 4x4's are allowed up this pass and in wet conditions, they would be the only vehicles to get up there. Mike's Pass leads up to the most beautiful panoramic views of the Drakensberg that can be accessed by vehicle. It is highly recommended for those who are unable to walk up to the little 'berg to make arrangements to go up the Pass. From here no matter how physically challenged you may be, you will feel a part of the mountains as you look down over the Cathedral Valley and up to well-carved peaks. Mike's Pass has been named after Mike De Viliers who built the pass by hand along with Italian Prisoners of war in the 1940's. Mike built the pass to access a part of the little 'berg to conduct research on the effect tree plantations would have on water sources. A whole weather station is now there with all sorts of equipment tha records all there is to know about water in this catchment area. |
