Monks Cowl Nature Conservancy is a member of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife located
at the end of the Champagne
Valley in the central
Drakensberg.
Monks Cowl is the name of the Peak located between the Cathkin and Champagne
Castle peaks. It is aptly named as its shape looks like a Monk's Cowl. However,
Monks Cowl peak can only be viewed south of the Champagne
Valley, thus from Injasuti
and further south one can see the "Monk's Cowl" or further north, i.e. from
the Ndedema and Cathedral
peak valleys and further north!
There is much controversy about the name of the valley, it is listed as
the Champagne Valley, but there is a sign that says, "Welcome to Cathkin
Park" closer to the mountains, whichever the powers-that-be decide, it is a
very busy valley with much for the tourist.
Hiking in
Monks Cowl is varied with easy river and country walks, moderate scenic
walks and strenuous hikes up to the contour path, to Blind man's corner,
up Sterkhorn/Mount Memory and to Keith's Bush camp.
