Spioenkop Game Reserve

Spioenkop Game Reserve is located between Ladysmith, Bergville and Winterton in the foothills of the Drakensberg.

Spioenkop Game Reserve is located between Ladysmith, Bergville and Winterton in the foothills of the Drakensberg. It is also situated at the entrance to Battlefields. Stocked with rhino, giraffe, zebra, eland and numerous other antelope, home to more than 270 bird species and with spectacular views of the Drakensberg over Spionkop Dam, Spioenkop Game Reserve is worth a visit.

The land expropriated as part of the Spioenkop dam construction on the Tugela River was proclaimed a reserve in 1974. With its acacia savanna, southern tall grassveld and valley bushveld it was a prime area to restock with a range of suitable animals. It has developed into a very scenically attractive reserve with its element of bush and water, against the back drop of the Drakensberg Mountains

Spioenkop Game Reserve is a popular spot for picnics and day trips. With advance notice we can organise (guided) tours to other points of historic interest e.g. the Battle of Spioenkop (1900) where the British army on its way to relieve besieged Ladysmith was involved in heavy fighting with the Boer Army. After heroic persistence on both sides, the Boers eventually occupied the summit - but with heavy casualties for all. Then there is also Kerkenberg and the Kaalvoet Vrou Monument, 4x4 excursions through the magnificent Mnweni valley right throught to Mike's Pass (Central Berg), etc
